IIM, a Pioneer French School in e-Sport
IIM, school of web and multimedia, is the first French school to have added e-sport to its curriculum in September 2016. Sport is mandatory for all students from year 1 to 3, who can choose to practice traditional sports like tennis, karate or soccer to name but a few. Now they may also sign up for e-sport.
Focus on this revolutionary discipline in higher education.
E-Sport training on campus
IIM trains professionals of all sectors of the digital world, including video game. The Parisian school could simply not overlook e-sport, hence the creation of a course in 2016. Students train on campus, on League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter Strike, Hearthstone, Fortnite and Fifa. They are led and coached by Mickaël Garimé, in charge of e-sport at IIM.
Major actors of the industry, like Riot Games, creator of League of Legends, have noticed IIM.
A group of students have been invited for an exclusive backstage visit of the Mid-Season International tournament in Paris, in the Spring of 2018.
Students were able to do playtests on the scene of the Zenith auditorium and to meet players a few hours prior to the game.
The school has made a name for itself in e-sport, because it is part of the educational programme but also because students have had good results in national competitions.
Competitions and ambitions
Many students taking e-Sport as a sport class are also member of student association LDV e-Sport. During the 2018/2019 school year, students have taken part in several competitions : Gamers Assembly, Student Gaming Network, Dreamhack… One of the teams playing Overwatch in the Gamers Assembly tournament won the e-Sport student series, becoming champion of French universities.
Each team has a captain, whose role is to organise schedules, plan meetings but overall think of strategies and keep players motivated at all times.
E-Sport keeps attracting new students at IIM. Teams playing on all games are strenghtening and already preparing for the new season.
